- [Henderson's] the use of the differential uptake of the rare radioactive isotope of carbon, 14C and the much more abundant isotope 12C, during carbon fixation by plants to date the remains of organic material in archaeology. The radiocarbon method can be used to date material between 3000 and 40,000 years old.
