- [Henderson's] any of the various episodes in evolutionary history in which numerous large groups of organisms disappear from the fossil record over a relatively short time (e.g. the extinction of the dinosaurs and other groups at the end of the Cretaceous). Mass extinctions are generally explained by sudden changes in climate, of various causes.
