Definition
- [Henderson's] as defined by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity: “the variability among living organisms from all sources, including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine, and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part. This includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.” The number of different living species is estimated at between 40 and 80 million, most of them still undiscovered and uncharacterized, each species containing yet further genetic diversity. Colloquially known as biodiversity. see also alpha diversity, beta diversity, gamma diversity, genetic diversity, species diversity, ecological diversity.
