Definition

  • [Henderson's] n. a layer of permanently frozen soil, usually sub-surface, which occurs where temperatures are low enough, and which is a feature of the tundra in polar regions. It is generally covered in warmer months with a thin partially melted layer, which in the tundra supports a vegetation of mosses, lichens, grasses and small herbaceous plants. The permafrost layer may be up to hundreds of metres thick.
