- [Henderson's] n.plu. general name for a heterogeneous group of unicellular, colonial and multicellular eukaryotic photosynthetic organisms of simple structure. Traditionally included in the plant kingdom, the different groups of algae are now often classified as divisions of the kingdom Protoctista (Protista).
