Definition

  • [Henderson's] the various processes by which carbon from atmospheric carbon dioxide enters the biosphere, circulates within it as organic carbon, and is eventu­ally returned to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. Carbon enters the biosphere by photosynthetic fixation of carbon dioxide into organic compounds and is returned to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide formed chiefly by respiration of living organisms, but also by burning of wood and fossil fuels.
