  • [Henderson's] n.plu. general name for a heterogene­ous group of unicellular, colonial and multicellular eukaryotic photosynthetic organisms of simple structure. Tradition­ally included in the plant kingdom, the different groups of algae are now often classified as divisions of the kingdom Protoctista (Protista).
