evolutionarily stable strategy
Definition
- [Henderson's] in evolutionary theory, a behaviour pattern or strategy which, if most of the population adopt it, cannot be bettered by any other strategy and will therefore tend to become established by natural selection. Using games theory the results of various different strategies (e.g. in contests between males) can be worked out and a theoretical ESS determined and compared with actual behaviour.
