photosynthesis

Definition

  • [Henderson's] n. (1) the use of light energy to power biosynthesis in living organisms; (2) in green plants, algae and cyanobacteria, it is the synthesis of carbohydrate from carbon dioxide as a carbon source and water as a hydrogen donor with the release of oxygen as a waste product, using light energy trapped by the green pigment chlorophyll. The primary products are ATP and NADPH, formed in the presence of light. These are then used in carbohydrate synthesis (the dark reaction). In green plants and algae, photosynthesis takes place in chloroplasts; (3) a similar process in other bacteria, but using hydrogen donors other than water and producing waste products other than oxygen. a. photosynthetic. see also bacteriochlorophyll, Calvin cycle, chlorophyll, photophosphorylation, photosystem I and II, reaction centre.
