- [Henderson's] n. term generally applied to a large heterogeneous group of heterotrophic, non-photosynthetic, aquatic unicellular eukaryotes, lacking cell walls. Examples are the non-photosynthetic flagellates, the amoebas and foraminiferans, the ciliates, and parasitic protozoa such as Eimeria, which causes coccidiosis, and Plasmodium, the malaria parasite. a. protozoan. see Actinopoda, Apicomplexa, Caryoblastea, Ciliophora, Cnidosporidia, Foraminifera, Rhizopoda, Zoomastigina.
