- [Henderson's] n.plu. general name for a heterogeneous group of unicellular, colonial and multicellular eukaryotic photosynthetic organisms of simple structure. Traditionally included in the plant kingdom, the different groups of algae are now often classified as divisions of the kingdom Protoctista (Protista). They are aquatic or live in damp habitats on land and include unicellular organisms such as Chlamydomonas and diatoms, colonial forms such as Volvox, the multicellular green, red and brown seaweeds, and
