Definition

[Henderson's] the number of mutations occurring in a population over some speciﬁed unit of time. The units used as the time denominator are commonly the total number of cell divisions or the total generation spans of the cells or organisms. The spontaneous mutation rate seems to vary between different organisms and between different genes. cf. mutation frequency.
