- [Henderson's] n. the oxidation of ammonium ion to nitrite, and the oxidation of nitrite to nitrate, carried out chiefly by a few groups of soil bacteria (nitrifiers), mainly genera Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter and also by a few species of fungi.
