Preferred term

beta diversity

Definition

  • [Henderson's] biological diversity resulting from competition between species that produces a finer adaptation of a species to the complete habitat, thus narrowing its range of tolerance to other environmental factors. Beta diversity is represented by the extent of change of species composition along an environmental gradient, e.g. of altitude, from one habitat to another. The greater the change, the higher the beta diversity. alt. habitat diversification. cf. alpha diversity.
