Preferred term

ultraviolet light

Definition

  • [Henderson's] electromagnetic radiation of wavelengths between those of the violet end of the visible light spectrum and X-rays. Although invisible to the human eye, it can be captured on photographic film. The ultraviolet (UV) spectrum is subdivided by wavelength into A (400–320 nm), B (320–280 nm) and C (280–10 nm) bands, of which UV-B is most harmful to living organisms. Much of the solar UV radiation, esp. the shorter wavelengths, is absorbed by the stratospheric ozone layer before reaching the Earth’s surface.
